The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as interpreted by Eli Mallouhi.

"Life at all Costs." This is a strange theme but it is a major one in the story The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This is evident in the story as Dr. Jekyll tries out his experiment on himself. He created a potion that he needed to try out on somebody. At first he could not get someone to try it for him so he decided to take it himself. He later learned the dangers of this terrible decision. He changed too much as he kept taking the potion as he became almost obsessed with the fact that he was being changed. He became very destructive and began hurting people. It is very clear that his decision was not worth it. "He had now seen the full deformity of that creature that shared with him some of the phenomena of consciousness, and was co-heir with him to death: and beyond those links of community, which in themselves made the most poignant part of his distress, he thought of Hyde, for all his energy of life, as of something not only hellish but inorganic." (Stevenson 84) Robert Louis Stevenson even stated that he really lived by the quote "life at all costs."

There are many examples of people living with this determination in the real world now. A major example of this would be the University of Southern California athletic program. They are a very great program and have many great sports teams. However they decided that they could try and get away with recruiting illegally. In the recruitments of all-star players such as Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, and Joe McKnight amongst others, they committed all of these violations hoping to help out their program, even though they knew the consequences of their actions. They did not seem to care because either they thought they could get away with it, or that the consequences were not as substantial as the rewards. They were mistaken. The whole program was severely punished for the next two years and it might take a few more to fully recover. I think its safe to say that it was not worth the risk.

I like how specific you are to USC's athletic program as they truly brought shame to their school's athletic department by their illegal recruitment of the players you named. It's a shame that they decided to break the rules and gain such an unfair advantage over the other schools on the sole philosophy that the reward outweighed the risk.
