Kevin L.

Frankenstein as interpreted by Kevin Leithauser

When reading Frankenstein the theme of "Life at All Costs" is very clearly seen. Victor Frankenstein is perusing life at all costs by trying to create life. By taking on this task he cuts all connections that he has with the outside world in order to not have anything distracting him from his goal. When Victor says "Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world"(Shelley 40) you can clearly see his determination in breaking through the boundaries of life and death. With Victor perusing life at all costs he pays the ultimate price by losing his life due to his creation.

There are many athletes nowadays that have the same type of determination as Victor when it comes to achieving something at all costs. Athletes will now put there body through anything just so they might get a competitive edge when playing on the ball field. They will resort to anything including steroids that will not only ruin their body in the long run but also ruin their reputation. One well known athlete that had made the decision to use steroids was Roger Clemens. Not only did he use the illegal drugs and get caught but he also lied about using them in court; he is now facing potential jail time for lying about using drugs, and will most likely no longer have any chance of making the Hall of Fame. Roger Clemens decision to use steroids may have helped increase his play as a pitcher but in the long run it ended up ruining his career and his life.

I feel the same way with the sports players and the different consequences they face for doing steroids.
