Nick D.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as interpreted by Nick Didio

The theme of "life at all costs" is clear in the ending of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll talks about being obsessed with separating the duality of nature into two forms, good and evil. "It was on the moral side, and in my own person, that I learned to recognise the thorough and primitive duality of man; I saw that, of the two natures that contended in the field of my consciousness, even if I could rightly be said to be either, it was only because I was radically both; and from an early date . . . I had learned to dwell with pleasure, as a beloved daydream, on the thought of the separation of these elements." (Stevenson 68) Jekyll is clearly obsessed with completing his experiment and even he, a gentleman, realizes that he is both good and evil. The evil is trying to control him and come out in him. The evil is the life that Dr. Jekyll is trying to get to at all costs.

Today many people devote their lives to the destruction of evil at all costs. Soldiers and policemen both put everything on the line everyday to protect us from the evils around us. Policemen put their lives on the line to protect us from murders, rapists, robbers and other criminals. Soldiers go on tours of duty for up to 6 months leaving behind their children and wives to fight our enemies who would attack us constantly if our soldiers were not there to stop them from such attacks. Some soldiers give their lives protecting our freedoms. Since the war is so difficult and the enemy is very clever, many soldiers have served multiple tours of duty and given up a good portion of their lives to the fight for our freedom. Sadly, some soldiers pay the ultimate price in the fight against evil.

I think you made a good point, Nick, about the soldiers and police officers. Although, I believe it's not exactly the same situation since Dr. Jekyll is pursuing life for the sole purpose of science, and more importantly, himself. Soldiers are fighting for a greater good and the freedoms of others.

I like you're take about people putting themselves in harms way for the greater good of others. They are defending what they love the most, freedom, at the cost of hindering their relationships and potential of injury.
