Joey P.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as interpreted by Joey Pallath.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde presented the theme of "Life at All Costs" throughout the book starting from the initial desire from Jekyll to pursue his push in science although putting himself as well as the safety as others at risk. By taking the potions that transformed him into Mr. Hyde, Jekyll lost his own sense, temporarily, to become a character that was considered true evil as he committed murder as well as other crimes. Although Jekyll became aware of these effects, knowing he was putting many others in harm's way, he continued taking the potion, eventually leading to involuntary transformations. He explained his desire for the change to become Hyde in his letter saying "it was as an ordinary secret sinner that I at last fell before the assaults of temptation." Jekyll's obsession with his experiment led not only to his own death but also to the deaths of each of Hyde's victims.

Although not to the same extent as Dr. Jekyll's obsession, it isn't uncommon for one to put his own body at risk in a similar fashion. Often, musicians have been known to use different drugs, especially hallucinogens, in the hope for it to make them more creative. A well known example of this was found in Jimi Hendrix, who even wrote music pertaining just to the drugs he had taken. These drugs would further damage his body and state of mind.
